Power Rangers In Space Vs MegaForce Aliens In Space

It is probably unfair of me to compare the grand 4-part ending-intro of Power Rangers Turbo-In Space to MegaForce, but I'm going to do it anyway.

They both consist of teams of teenagers. They both have enemies from Space, so one would figure that there would eventually be an encounter up there. Both introductions are directed by Jonathan Trachzor.

Conflicts:
Turbo/In-Space
(Beware SPOILERS)
  • Goldgoyle shows up
  • Destroys both Megazords
  • The Turbo RAM
  • Zordon shoots a distress signal from Eltar.
  • Dimitria and the Blue Senturion leave
  • Divatox invades the Command Center.
  • Divatox captures Lightning Cruiser and Storm Blaster
  • Divatox infiltrates the Base
  • Zordon/Dimitria can't go back to Earth
  • Rangers lose powers
  • Rangers lose Justin
  • Although campy, Alliance of Evil gathers
  • Zordon is revealed to be drained of powers
  • Andros and the others mistake each other for enemies
  • Astronema does not make a mistake
  • Rangers are sent back home to Earth by Andros
  • It is implied Andros does not want to lose another teammate
  • Alpha goes missing
  • Rangers are captured
MegaForce:
Monsters want to attack Earth. Defend it. Homework. Do not mess up hair.

Tensou Sentai Goseiger Vs PR Megaforce First Impressions

With the first couple of episodes introduced, I would like to compare Tensou Sentai Goseiger with Power Rangers MegaForce.

Here we go!

Production Values/Song:
Goseiger wins by a ton. It's original. It's very upbeat. It does not do a bad job at ripping off Go Go Power Rangers. Did I mention it did not do a bad job at ripping off Go Go Power Rangers?
Goseiger's original footage was great., albeit the kid footage was unadaptable which had some problems for MegaForce.

Premise: A bunch of protectors of a galaxy vs "teenagers with attitudes."
Sure it is not a promising comparison being put into a preschool pseudo teenage soap opera.
Then again, it happened with Mighty Morphin and it turned out just fine.

Unnecessary kid storyline vs unnecessary teenager storyline
Audiences lose both ways. MegaForce gets a slight lead for not forcing the issue too much to be like Goseiger, even though they basically just copied Mighty Morphin.

Rockstar weapons vs not an homage to the Rockstar monster:
Though it already was, MegaForce did make the show a little less camp, so the points go to MegaForce for good adaptation.

Overall, both had horribly flawed introductions that did not establish much of the show. MegaForce established who has the hots for who and that Noah's a nerd, but no reason for them to protect Earth.
Goseiger only established that Black and Yellow are siblings and that Gosei Red forgets things like Tommy! (Why are there so many Mighty Morphin references in Goseiger that MegaForce wisely does not use.) Watching Goseiger makes you realize that the choices MegaForce used could have been worse (or better..)

What could have been with Power Rangers Mega/Pirate Force

First off, as mentioned before, it is just terrible that Disney decided to sell Power Rangers after once again dropping the ball on what could have been an awesome teamup.
With Operation Overdrive, we could have used the Boukenger Cinderella episode,
and now Marvel's Thor!

Now with Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, we could bring Pirates into the mix as well!
One Piece and Pirates of the Caribbean all in one roof.

Heck, Disney could have teamed up Star Wars with Power Rangers Space Pirates! How awesome would that have been?
farm8's flickr
That would have been one of the ultimate showdowns in world history! One of the most awesome franchises in history! They could be sniffing and burning and urinating on all the stock and money they wanted!

But then Haim Saban bought Power Rangers!
Who cares? Disney was too busy remastering it anyway! It was all turning to sh*t!
Save us Saban! Save us!
In Samurai, they put homages to Mighty Morphin in it, so Gokaiger has to be great in the US right?
I mean you're combining the great popularity of Gokaiger with the great popularity of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, just like you were combining the great popularity of Shinkenger with the great popularity of MMPR!

Weak yet intelligent Billy could be played by weak intelligent Doc.
Weak yet intelligent Kimberly could be played by weak yet intelligent Ahim.
Strong and leadership fearing Jason could be portrayed by strong and bold Captain Marvelous.
Trini and Zack can be portrayed as his sparring partners, like Joe and Luka
Blake Foster can play a parody of himself as GokaiSilver Gai! If not, we can just get the Shortround from the George Lucas Strikes Back trailer!
Heck, they could be portrayed by the original owners of the Power Coins who met Zordon and Alpha on Earth millions of years ago!
It would be great!

Oh...

Stuff you know and stuff I'm guessing after watching Kyoruger Brave 01

Stuff you already know already
Kyoryuger is a combination of a Zyuranger motif with a JAKQ sash.
It's the first Sentai with Red, Blue, Green, Black all male at the same time as the first four males. Kyoryuger fits the rest of Dinosaur Super Sentai only having one female Ranger/Man senshi.
Their morpher is a toy gun. Very discreet!

What I'm guessing Kyoryuger's about:
Kyoryu Red is the Brave one. He beat his own mecha in the first episode!

Blue Native American Guardian Beasts character already bad ass. Too bad there's already five males vs the one female.
Black is the flirt bad boy.
Blue is the good guy grease monkey.
Green is the no nonsense school boy.

The fights are good (not as good as Zyuranger, but good)
Too much CGI!
It is cool however that the mechs and Senshi can combine for attacks.

This could have been a badass Super Sentai, but they decided to keep it camp. It's at least interesting and went somewhere compared to Gobusters.

The Anatomy of a Song (Megaforce vs Mighty Morphin)

In addition to the analysis of the shows, I've decided to analyze the songs as well.
Oh Juliet! What is a rose, by any other... lyric?

Power Rangers... Megaforce!
I literally felt sick. Didn't help that I played Antichamber with its weird framerate before watching it.

Vs...

Ah!
After 1000 years, I'm free!
It's time to conquer Earth!
Alpha, recruit a team of teenagers with attitude!
Go Go Power Rangers!
Go Go Power Rangers!
Go Go Power Rangers! Mighty Morphin Power Ranger-ers!
Go Go Power Rangers!
Go Go Power Rangers!
Go Go Power Rangers, You Mighty Morphin Power Ranger-ers!
They've got-
A power and a force that you've never seen before!
They've got-
A power and a force that can even up the score!
No-
one-
can ever take them down!
The powers on their si-yi-yi-yi-(a million)-ides!

Repeat chorus.

Not to mention that Power Rangers did not only consist of a mere theme song. It was a opera and ballet of music. Not a shouting match. The silences of In Space building up what was behind the shadows of the universe. The classical music of Lost Galaxy demonstrating what kind of legend Lost Galaxy would present.

Power Rangers Megaforce Episode One Review: Unmega Mission

Nagisa Oshima, Kaneto Shindo, Ingmar Bergman, Jean Luc-Godard, etc., I've betrayed you! I caved! It was me all along! I did it! FORGIVE ME!

In case you did not know, (and you probably don't cause I only need one toe to count how many people read this site) I watched  on youtube, to make sure I would not give it a view. (

And I don't regret it.

It's not Samurai.
Unfortunately, it's still a lot friggin close than I would like it to be. And the two shows are essentially sharing the same bed at the moment!

They did not copy it shot-for-shot.
In fact, there's this awesome helicopter shot of a Red Ranger practicing on a rooftop that a Sentai director would have came up with himself.
It's not exactly indie, but then again Asylum can do those same shots as well.
Instead of copying the script from Shinkenger and adapting it poorly, they copied the script from Mighty Morphin and did it poorly.
I still have to wait for a few more episodes to see if there is character development in the show. However so far the show is still making the same mistake most (children's) shows make by creating characters, instead of people one can relate with. This stuff just does not hit right away like in Mighty Morphin where in High Five, you learn that Trini has a fear of heights and in A ZEO Beginning where we forget about that entire kid mess and have to have that awkward transition into learning about how Tanya's character worked in Shooting Star.
Or perhaps they are just directed to be annoying. I dunno.

Gosei's Olmec or Zordon now. And there's a robot that's supposed to be Alpha. Cute. Very cute...

They also fight the monsters once they leave their "command center" like in Mighty Morphin. The fight scene's actually a lot more dynamic than the original Mighty Morphin fight. They carried over the fact that the enemy is not given much depth or reason for us for us to care about them "attacking Earth," but then again Rita did not either (aside from an earthquake and a wonderful combination of performance by Machiko Soga and Barbara Goodson!)
They get flipped over.

They morph.

It's morphin' time.

In fact the whole episode is like that:

Nothing vs introduction of iconic character. "Don't leave! You'll miss my coming out party! That's when I destroy the nearest planet! Hahahaha!"

Introduce school.
(School that establishes they go to school and how smart they are and who they like)
VERSUS
(Establishes characters favorite hobbies after trying three different pilots including Bulk and Skull!

Billy demonstrates a fighting weakness, which gives his character a flaw, an arc to overcome. Sure, it is not established in this episode, but is fully utilized in later episodes. His character ends up growing the most in possibly all of Power Rangers history. You could debate the hardships of everyday school is their arc.)

Establishing they're friends, er... Classmates rather trying to survive a suburban school with no arcs.
Vs
Friends trying to survive school bullying, the stresses of every overachieving kid. Earthquake on Earth

One shot of the enemy base.
Vs.
Shots that establish the enemy base are constantly shown throughout the show.

You couldn't even make up a name for the new Ernie? Not Richard or Mr. Ginelle? How about just let him be a dessert guy without having a specific name?

Which brings me to...

Nitpicks:

I also don't like the idea of one of the Rangers having the hots for one of the original five. It's a Mighty Morphin homage and that did not happen in Mighty Morphin.
To quote Mr. Plinkett, "I don't like things that are different!"
(WHY KIM?! WHY?!)

Haha! Nature! Can't good guy friends just accept your other friends' beliefs?

To make things worse, it was directed directly by Trachzor himself! -_- So any nitpicks I have are directly influenced by the producer himself.

At least, they'll have guest stars to save this season...

Someone I do not care for joined Power Force

Not a very creative name, not really applicable, yadda yadda yadda.

I do hope the best of your relationship, considering your history by yourselves and with each other

:) :) :)

I think Mike Mattei should sell his house

Just build it out of DVD boxes. Woof

Reasons I Don't Want To Watch Megaforce: Time for the Trolloz

Jonathan Trachzor is still Executive Producer and he made Unsuper Unsamurai Super Samurai Shitty Shitty Bang Bang or whatever you want to call it. So it is going to be made cheap with little soul and heart into the project, just because they do not know who to hire to make the show good again.

In fact, correcting what's wrong with Super Samurai may make you less in favor with the shows' officers, because you'd be changing "what made Samurai so popular," which is what Saban & Company want to avoid, although, they did this from Mighty Morphin all the way till the slump in Turbo.

Financially, the series was a hit with a very low budget. Critically, the team did not know what made Power Rangers click. Bringing Tony Oliver did not help.
It's sort of like watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the.... y'know. I ain't saying it cuz the title is too long.

Seriously, they're like 50 years older!

Two years ago, I watched Nagisa Oshima, Seijin Suzuki, David Lynch, John Schlesinger, Park Chan-wook, Lars Von Trier, Jean Luc-Godard and Robert Bresson. I tried watching Mighty Morphin and I started noticing all these little things that bothered me with the show that I already knew were flawed in the second season and it bothered me a bit. I was not as addicted with the show as I was before having fun with the little footage changes and simple story repetition. It was no longer a phenomenon or fascination with me anymore. It had went from my life to a My Little Pony fad as I evolved my work with more fulfilling projects.

That is not to say Power Rangers cannot be fulfilling..

But look at the results!

They brought in new writers and Trachzor personally directed the first episode, so hope?
Maybe.

But boy does that sound exciting?

The Good
They seem like they'll be a bunch of Power Ranger nerds and think that Mighty Morphin is gold. It'll be preschoolish like Samurai was, while appealing to adults without it being like a Black Stallion or WALL-E. Admirable.
Geoff Dolan the voice of Koragg and Dai Shi coming back.
