The introduction of the Empress is similar to that of the introduction of other characters displayed in any other sci fi show at the time like a Star Trek fanfiction worthy to build upon from the series.

They do not explain the hierarchial structure of the Vyram through exposition, but rather through the taking of power. A warlordish society much like that of ancient Eastern times.
