The great ending of Power Rangers Operation Overdrive
So a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there was the infamous Power Rangers Operation Overdrive. It started with a really high debut for the Disney era before fizzling out. I enjoyed the show, but there were a lot of critics. A lot of people hated this series for some odd reason. Some stuff was bad: acting, directing, having less than 40 episodes, etc.. not to mention the lack of concentration of this being an anniversary season compared to its Japanese counterpart, Go Go Sentai Boukenger was a problem. Imagine if the baddie had created bad guys out of former Rangers zords, the inspiration for Toei in Japan.
However, that was the problem: it was a Power Ranger series so people were biased. As I will note, rewatching the series, a lot of the stuff taken while watching the show without watching Boukenger makes the show quite enjoyable. Whether it's a masterpiece, is.. well probably isn't debatable at all, but I think 10 years later, this show may have been underestimated the entertainment, lore and overall payoff of the show.
MY ORIGINAL THOUGHTS: I thought the Android storyline was dumb and out of nowhere.
Well, a couple days ago, revisited the reveal, it was just sorta dumb. They allowed it in the beginning with hints that Mack considered him an object, although it was a bit forced as he treated like a human, his son even.
Spencer and Andrew later hint that they only met Mack two years ago.
However, some rewatching has some payoff, although I do suspect that the Netflix edit may have been tinkered with like to some extent although not as much with Mystic Force in my opinion.
The series is also too short and they mention it so briefly that it doesn't come off as really strong.
It's not good sci fi, which I'll get into when Mack has his speech about fighting Moltor in the second to last episode, episode 31. There's not a lot of technobabble as to how Mack's sci fi works, and it's not really that philosophical in terms of where they go on where he goes with the realization that he's an android and that his memories are fake, etc.. If they were going to go with that storyline and then that route, they should've went a lot more philosophical.
They did that with RPM and I think it worked really well. I think Operation Overdrive may have even inspired it a bit hence they have the whole Mack helmet there.
However, it wasn't like the Matrix or Inception had just come out and fans were wondering about things about which of Mack's memories were real or not. I felt like because they were under the Disney mandate, they couldn't write a storyline with that.
And it definitely could've since going to different locations itself is very Nolan/Wachowski-esque. They go to a television show on this television show. They go to all these locations on your television show, which aren't really the locations they claim and is really just New Zealand to have Wachowski/Matrix-esque fights.
The Corona Aurora and Jewels are very video game-Matrix-esque MacGuffins themselves.
Heck, Master Mao in the next series, is from the Matrix, even if it is a sequel, Matrix Revolutions.
And although RPM didn't quite go that far itself, it did so much that Disney would blame the show on that, even though it was because about the horrible 6 AM SATURDAY timeslot.
However, what they did with it was very good character wise in the end product, (although Power Rangers fans as usual, gave up before giving the storyline a chance, including myself admittedly)
Mack wanted his humanity: Moltor gave up his, although I don't recall that he gave it up so there's like a missing scene there, so there seems to be something strong about their beef against each other whether retconned in or not. But I really dig that. They're characters that compare and contrast with each other. I don't know the last time since the Neo Saban era where they happened.
Florious destroys his brother. The ending Andrew can't give up Mack to Flourious. Norg opposes Flourious in the end.
Mack doesn't understand why the jewels were given away. Same with the Operation Overdrive. So the element of family is there.
Tyzonne is back with his girlfriend.
That's probably a really powerful pay off for a Disney era storyline. Mystic Force last season didn't have it.
And it's also a bit darker: Mack is willing to commit suicide because he realizes he's a robot and considers himself replaceable. Andrew doesn't, so Mack eventually takes effort to take value in his own life.
Not to mention, Moltor who I consider the true baddie of the whole series, or at least does the most dies very slowly. He then has his body frozen, the worst possible death for a man who lives on a volcanic celestial being. prior to getting exploded by his own brother, all while not sounding tough and very human much like God Neros' final words in Choujinki Metalder.
The not being able to die thing ended up being a strength of Mack's I don't know why he would want to be turned into a human afterward. Feel pain, hunger. That's a lot of stuff that wasn't covered. Heck, that may even be a plothole, although sci fi androids can do those things.

VR Troopers Season 1 Episode 21 "The Great Brain Robbery" review
In college, I found the episode to be quite exciting because of the bickering between Ivar and Grimlord. Grimlord insults Ivar causing Ivar to use a weapon that Grimlord made him in charge of to be on his side. Ivar is quite Starscream-ish including his airplane face design.
However, as much as I dislike agreeing with detractors of the adaptation process of VR Troopers, probably because they never watched the episode, there's a point. Ivar and Grimlord don't talk to each other on screen, so they don't have that Megatron-Starscream-ish chemistry. Not even Kirk and Khan never being on screen at the same time dynamic. (Then again I never really understood Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.)
They seem to seem to skip the line where Ivar says he'll betray Grimlord which is quite oftputting, although I definitely like how there's betrayal, there's a human aspect of trust establish by Grimlord's men opposed to just constantly following his words because the show tells you too, even if he doesn't follow Grimlord's words, because the show tells you to.
A lot of the episode is not really relevant and sorta padded out, although I do like a bit of talk between Woody and Kaitlin discussing the general's brain, even if it is kids show comic book show cheese.
The brain has blood with a red liquid feeding it, a Halloween effect, but quite effective and creepy even now when I'm at age 30. The fact theat they discuss teleporting ghosts on the scene works as well, not because of what I said but because Grimlord's Skugs do that, and Captain Brighton describes it quite well.
Overall, I didn't remember the episode when I was young, it was a great episode when I was college, there's not enough character, plot or anything for me to enjoy it much at 30 though, although the action is quite enjoyable.

Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Episode 4, "Heart of Blue" episode 4 review 10 years later
Before, I really disliked this episode, pretty much because Dax's name was Dax. The episode was strinkingly similar to Boukenger although not Samurai-ish despite the Yasuko Kobayashi connection. (Seem familiar with what I thought of the Will episode you think?)
Dax's acting was great as was Miritrix. It was really hard to tell she was going to be the baddie, and the only reason I thought so was cuz I watched Overdrive. I always liked Miritrix's actress and she shines even brighter before in this viewing.
I thought Spencer was gonna disguise himself as the baddie, in the end of the episode.
Really wonder how they pay off Dax's storyline in the end
There's great martial arts
Will states a woman has Dax under her spell before hugging Rose.
He also asks about his hovertech cycle. They fight Chillers later on.
Gray Manx capturing things. They could've worked Dax and Will together into the episode together better, especially since the Boukenger episode features Blue and Black. I dunno, I would even say that originally Disney wanted to make it two episodes before combining the two storylines.
They establish that Dax is about being the hero. I never watched the finale of the series to figure out if this happens, but hopefully he does, as it would be a big payoff. I wish they incorporated that more with Mack's character through the series, like they could've showed a similarity between Dax and Will's characters this episode. Oh well. Hopefully, it'll work out later.

Why Lionsgate will depend more on Saban/Disney Power Ranger characters than they have to
They could possibly not do it as Mighty Morphin was the most popular incarnation of the franchise.
- They have access to them, so why not use em?
- DC/Star Wars other franchises that have some comic books, milk using a character well or un-known to synergize with the rest of their universe.
- We live in a postmodern world where reference and Easter Egg is more important that quality of story.
- They already did like crazy with Zeo Crystals and Mariner Bay. Their goal now is basically to milk it as much as possible.
Why Tommy doesn't have to be the Green Ranger in Power Rangers.
The cast wants it.
Sure, he was introduced, but that doesn't mean he'll be the White Ranger
For all you hating the idea of a female Green Ranger, there already is one with Rita and no one is complaining. This change was equally as controversial as say giving the Phantom Ranger an identity instead of a man of mystery, a mistake they made with Sam in Power Rangers SPD.
This is a film about a Ranger dealing with sexual orientation and a man of the spectrum so you want it to be less open minded?
They didn't make enough changes in this film?
Will Tommy not make money?
They can't cast Jason David Frank to play a teenager now.
80 year old Tommy.
Jdf is annoying
Jdf charges a hundred dollars a signing and complains when you sell the autograph for the same amount
Jdf sexually harassed aj on the set
Jdf made David Yost eat a fly
Jdf was a horrible actor
Jdf wanted a power ranger sent to jail when there wasnt enough evidence for it
Bryan Cranston as the Green Ranger.

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger episode 4 review
The whole episode is about Raptor wanting to become a Kyuranger and it's hilarious. Dopey. Her daydreams are hilarious and I hope they keep it in the series as doubtful as that is.
Without dreams vs lives is dumb. Steal dreams like the monster is done well visually though as much as it doesn't make sense in real life.
The Raptor footage with English language is good for US footage.
Kyuranger and Ninja Steel both have android oriented episodes.
Raptor has a Z-move.
RANDOM:
The monster has a penis nose.

for the Lionsgate movie, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pedophilia in episode 7, "Big Sisters"
Now I'm not implying this was intended or is a porno but like Alpha's Magical Christmas you just sorta get bored watching this episode and assume stuff and sorta think it's creepy in either how it ended up or ina lynchian way.
Rita is after eggs for some odd reason thinks Maria will be able to bring the power rangers to their knees
They want to be Maria's friend and likewise
Kim asks who the hottest boy is in Maria's class
Maria says her dad won't understand
They ask Maria to go inside their car
Now it's not odd for that to happen but it's definitely not normal how they portrayed it

Why just not use the Pulliticorn this episode no Jason with armor footage?
Since this is 2017, I might as well comment on how Donald Trump would turn down this petition for poisonous and how Flint, Michigan still doesn't have clean water.
Why did they film Kimberly elbowing a putty but to the point where nothing was seeable? Censors?
Alpha and Zack dancing.
Different Rangers teleporting.
The Menacing Minotaur has nothing to do with pollution, but then again, tying it in was weird it was a good move not using the.
I also again dislike how they never use the Rangers to get the weapons, but then again green screen wasn't that good back then.

It's a good piece of editing syncing up Rita saying "destroy the nearest planet" then show one.
I noticed watching High Five first that Power Rangers staff use Bulk and Skull to preview the even worse evils of the show.
A non believer.
Rita is a magician.
There's also aliens.
Yoda
Powers.
Ancient creatures.
Don't get it. Trini.
Explosion on the Star Trek rock.
The audience must believe in Zordon and Japanese footage Power Rangers.
Jason is the leader, teacher. Zack spars. It was originally Trini in the second pilot.
Trini is a brain and martial artist.
Billy is a brain.
Kimberly is a gymnast.
The way Zordon speaks in this episode is different from the rest of the show.
Bulk is the bad form of martial arts, undisciplined a mockery.
There's a good use of harp when they're in the chamber.

For the Lionsgate movie: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 2 "High Five"
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 Episode 2, "High Five" is a great episode on multiple levels. This episode gets more and more addictive the more I rewatch. The original idea of a dark 90s kids show where a protagonist has to deal with his/her fear opposed to say farting slime in someone's face or talking with a suitcase is always a great plus.
The setup with the rope in the beginning works really well.
Kimberly yells, C'mon, Jason. You can do it. Keep going."
Jason climbs a rope, foreshadowing Trini's later struggle.
In addition to Jason, temporarily losing grip of the Bulk falls possibly what Trini may do later.
Also, the audience sees it from Jason's POV instead of Trini's, making them start to fear heights as if they were doing it from Trini's POV emotionally rather than visually.
Yo man. Back off. You never be nervous.
Ooze you can come from.
Sort of a Bulk fat joke.
They do encounters enemies as well on top.
This is also an allusion to the debut episode.
I also might've considered using the King Sphinx episode for this. Although a Jason episode, Jason climbs the rope, and it actually has to do with flying. Kimberly flying a plane is another good example of what could've been a factor, albeit in real times it would've been really difficult to make a person afraid of climbing mountains fly a plane. Then again, flying is relatively safe especially on a small plane like that.
The communicator is introduced.
And the effects to make them look like they transform is very good. An edit done since the Christopher Reeve Superman days.
Alpha hijinx.
The Rangers finally defeat Putties by themselves.
They recycle a frame where a Putty or Kimberly ducks.
Also being afraid of the mountain is sorta unreasonable since there's a lot of room on the mountain to prevent you from falling off.
The putty dies.
The power morpher falls.
Bones could've been a reallly cool villain, but he sorta has nothing to do with the episode.
There's sort of a plothole with Rita sending the Giant down, when the Rangers already showed improvement defeating putties without morphing. Perhaps she could've said they were tired?
Ernie talks about the Power Rangers this episode. They're famous. Teleport and communicate.

Hyakkyujuu Sentai Gaoranger does a lot like Zyuranger including the Burai arc
Gaoranger starts with easy to understand characters, some previously being involved in fighting as warriors.
They have a Sixth Ranger who is an ancient Ranger, of which carries the memories of the show. They make it a bit different by having him separate into the Duke Org, which I admit is unique. 15-23, 26, 30
They have the same helmets.

Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger overview: Gaoranger should've started/had only 3 senshi
Gao Red is lackluster, albeit I'm unsure if they would've kept with 80s action hero stereotypes of Power Rangers. Not much of a story there.
Gao Black has only a girlfriend storyline that is sorta lackluster and boring.
Gao Blue doesn't do much either. A generic weak Ranger. Never overcomes his weakness or is emphasized for his weakness.
Gao White was a kind female, helps the Princess, loyal to her father and martial arts although isn't a real emphasis either.
Gao Yellow was interesting but underused. A Black Condor of the team. Loyal, but sort of a mean guy.
Gao Silver is an ancient warrior who comes back.
They could've emphasis Silver, as he and the Gaoranger suits are inspired by Zyuranger. Gao Yellow had the sword.

Power Rangers Time Force Episode 36, "Circuit Unsure" 15 years later
Circuit loses some data about the future losing him confidence.
Trip needs Circuits help to defuse a bomb.
Will he receive the help?
I'm not sure if the Alex storyline was executed perfectly, but enjoyable episode, even if Circuit could've died when no one defused the bomb.

Power Rangers Time Force episode 34, "Reflections of Evil" review
There's a mirror monster who summons multiple enemies for the Power Rangers to defeat.
Will the Rangers succeed?
This isn't the last episode so they do.
Mirror enemies.
Cool to fight a bunch of other enemies.
Missing opportunity to fight enemy Nejiranger.
The use of music really camps up what could've been some sort of pimp monster in Timeranger.

Power Rangers Time Force Episode 35 15 Years Later, "Nadira's Dream Date"
"Nadira's Dream Date" is about a mistaken identity.
Nadira reads a note from Lucas.
It's actually meant for his first Race Car.
L-M-A-O.
The Race Car reference does fit the character well.
Ransik playing father figure to Lucas works out quite well. I'm unsure if it fits the show, but then again, I find most of Ransik's villainy in the show to be lame. especially in the finale.
They probably spent so much money on Gluto spent on the end, but it's hilarious.

God Neros: from beginning to end
God Neros is one of the most well written characters of toku history.
Inspired, by the antiwar antiarmy antigovernment themes of Shotaro Ishinomori's Kikaider, Metalder's nemesis is a war profiteer. Neros has very little to be liked about him. Spoilers alert:he kills Koga, he has multiple opportunities to create the destruction of Earth to favor him in situations. He mindcontrols Mai's father into fighting Metalder in one of the darkest moments of the series.
He became powerful through the power of United States gangsters.
Also, note that the United States takes over Japan.
Singapore is brought along to the mix a well.
And I would even consider Metalder to be less in canon with the canon-less Metal Heroes, because of Metalder's references to real life sittuations.
Yet, in the end, despite the fact that God Neros has ruined the world and possibly destroyed it, there are a lot of interesting notes in his production. Like what Rob Ager said about making the Germans in Saving Private Ryan absolutely evil people and not suffer during their deaths, Metalder does the exact oppoisite. God Neros has one of the most gruesome deaths in toku history, despite being one of the worst possible villains. First, Metalder throws a sword, and first off, it hits him, and he reacts to it. It doesn't look bad ass or cool, as if he was like the Terminator or Rambo: This is the 80s, and he's a bad guy, who exploits charity's so that he can make money off the weapons and suffering of the world, and he grunts. It's a human grunt. He isn't played off as superhuman or I dunno! He's vulnerabile. He's no devil after all. And he already has the upperhand on a cyborg who's life is fading before his eyes and shouldn't have anymore.
God Neros' Clark Kent is an actual human persona.
Now, there's a bit of interesting stuff in the final blow on Neros. My first reaction was that the ending wasn't dark enough, because it wasn't clear what happened to both Metalder or Neros. Was Metalder truly lobotimized? What's Metalder's fate? Where will he hide? Will Ryusei live on?
And Neros' death is interesting as well. Neros' death is censored, so I sorta first reacted as a guy in my 80s, why'd they censor that for such a dark moment? He's decapitated. First off, the decapitation is barely seen. 1) it censors it. 2) there's no moment where you're like wow, that's huge ass Death Star explosion Ho-shit. Like there's really no time for you to react to that death before we get to Neros' aftermath of possibly destroying the Earth. Now it sorta dehumanizes him as we don't see his body or give him a funeral, or figure out what happens to the rest of his army and generals and crime syndicate-
But we can fill in the blanks.
Also, his decapitation is sort of like that as if you had witnessed a Guillotine during the French revolution. You don't see the head, and we hope it's painless especially after he makes a rather sympathetic humanizing grunt full of vulnerability.
This is unlike most tokusatsu, where explosions are edited in with bad guy fights or they do something really awesome like pull out an organ and make it explode.
Metalder kills off a human being in the end. This is opposed to a God, although what Metalder wants to be is a human.

Power Rangers Time Force 15 Years Later Episode 27-30, "Frax's Fury" "Dawn of Destiny" "Fight against Fate" and "Destiny Defeated"
Overall, the episodes are still very strong. Yet there is adaptation decay, as why would the robots still work for Ransik? No failsafe by Frax? Ransik can program?!
One of the laughs from the villains sounded horribly forced.
When Venomak bites the rangers, some fight frames seem missing.
I wonder if they can weaponize Venomak's fangs.
28 does more with the Collins-Wes relationship.
However, they sorta don't really establish why Collins likes money other than stuff we'd just assume not watching the show, like power, etc or just rich guy tropes.
Anyway, Collins reveals he cares for his son and attempts to kill Ransik stating he'd never give him the antidote if he knew. I guess it was cool they didn't rely on the flashback trope.
Eric is given some time as a second in command of Biotech.
Episode 29 has a lot of blunders.
Alex plays "bad guy" by saying they should wear Time Force suits. Really meh.
They couldn't go the "he looks like Alex, but maybe isn't necessarily?"
"This is your base of operations?"
Just a civilian. Put on your uniforms.
It's a shame, because Jason Faunt plays this new version of Alex better than he does Wes.
"Looks like you've been working really hard."
Wes meanwhile has to care for his dad who defended him the previous episode and has to worry about his legacy. The family legacy.
I also think that originally Eric was supposed to establish that he wanted the Collins Biotech company power, instead of rich guys, but it sorta got lost in editing, it seemed. Also they seemed to want to put a wedge between Wes and Eric, but that wasn't done thoroughly either.
Wes is given the power of Biotech.
Alex could've made it so that he wanted to keep his timeline so that he'd exist.
Minor notes of Episode 29-30 to get them out of the way, since they're related.
30 Destiny defeated
Eric and Birds again. I think this was probably influenced by the intro of Timeranger with birds.
Best scanner?
So they have a storyline about Wes and his dad. Then they have a storyline about Wes and rejoining the team. Sorta inconsistent.
Why are they stronger with Wes?
Riding the Q-Rex.
Eric helps Wes see his dad.
Not in bed trope.
Alex hard on you trope.
Why have Jason Faunt play two characters opposed to someone who looks like his son. Luckily he does a good job playing the son.

Power Rangers Time Force Episode 20 15 Years Later, "Quantum Secrets" review
So they use the footage where Naoto gets killed off quite early in the friggin 20th episode.
Eric has a thing for birds prior to flying.
As cheesy as some of the green screening is, at least we saw Conwing's limb chopped off even if frozen.
Eric has a thing for birds prior to flying.
Conwing was played by Sean CW Johnson who previously worked with Southworth on Lightspeed Rescue, where Southworth was a stunt man.
Morphing Cyclobots and Conwing were cool.
Jen doesn't want Eric to be tough. I would've preferred it however, if she had just explained Wes to Eric, albeit that probably wouldn't have worked either since it'd either be sappy, hocky or Eric just wouldn't listen.
Eric getting Jen's blaster was cool.
Mega Battle.
Power Rangers Time Force 15 Years Later Episode 19 "Trip Takes a Stand" review
So Power Rangers Time Force is known for dark themes such as racism, classism, etc.. and "Trip Takes a Stand" is a big factor into that.
Did the monster and Trip really have to run so funnily in such a serious episode about racism?
When did Eric start hating aliens? He doesn't mention it in previous episodes, in addition has no problems with races of other humans. He's the antihero so whatever, make him do evil things, or unlikeable things.
In contrast though, Dan Southworth saying the gun didn't work, . Although, you could've made it even more interesting by making that less clear and even more fitting of his character.
Frax controlling a mosnter seems more evil later when you find out what happened to Frax.
Why is Eric all of a sudden referring to criminals as mutants?
I believe the original idea was that Eric just does his job, which is my original premise along with the diversity theme.
